Abstract
Debate continues over the role of translation in foreign language (FL) education. While many emphasize its linguistic, cultural, and cognitive benefits, others associate it with traditional, constraining pedagogies. This study investigates how translation and its audiovisual modes are perceived in Greece by pre-service language teachers at the University of the Aegean, in-service teachers across several educational levels, and professional translators. Using a sequential mixed-methods design, data from a validated 40-item questionnaire completed by 89 pre-service teachers and a focus group with 10 professionals revealed broadly positive attitudes toward translation, especially audiovisual translation (AVT), for classroom and autonomous language learning. Participants associated AVT with motivation, oral skills, overall proficiency, multimodal learning, cultural awareness, and transversal competences, while warning against overreliance and literalism. Findings support a more systematic and critically guided integration of AVT into FL curricula and teacher education programs, highlighting its potential as a learner-centered and culturally responsive pedagogical practice.
